Beautifying Our Community — One project at a time.
As part of the Tri‑County Small Business Trail, the Roots & Renewal Project is a community‑powered beautification effort focused on uplifting our town during the Route 66 Centennial Celebration.
This year, thousands of travelers will be exploring the Mother Road — and we want Virden to shine.
We are raising funds to support a series of community beautification projects.
Any funds raised beyond our goal will be donated to the North Mac Art Program to support local student creativity.

Step back in time as you walk around the Virden square. Our History Brought to Life banners showcase rare and beloved photographs from Virden’s past — storefronts, streets, families, and everyday moments that shaped the town we know today. Most banners are placed near the location where the original photo once stood, creating a powerful side‑by‑side connection between then and now.
This living outdoor gallery invites residents and visitors to rediscover our roots, honor the people who came before us, and celebrate the stories that continue to shape our community.

Our Roots & Renewal project isn’t just about honoring the past — it’s about nurturing the present. Throughout the Virden square, vibrant pots and planters add color, life, and charm to our community spaces. Many have already been placed, bringing fresh greenery and seasonal blooms to the heart of town, and we’re excited to continue expanding this effort.
Each new planter helps create a more welcoming, walkable, and uplifting environment for residents, visitors, and local businesses. As we add more pots and plants around the square, we’re growing a brighter, more beautiful Virden one bloom at a time.

As part of the Roots & Renewal Project, the Virden History Walk brings our town’s past into the present in a way that’s engaging, educational, and deeply meaningful. Beginning at the Miners Memorial Wall — a cornerstone of our community and a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made during the 1898 Virden Mine Battle — this walk guides visitors through the events, people, and places that shaped our town.
Each stop along the route features a marker and a QR code that connects you to expanded stories, historic photos, and deeper context. From long‑gone storefronts to pivotal moments in labor history, the History Walk transforms our square into an open‑air museum where every corner has a story to tell.
This project celebrates where we’ve been, honors those who came before us, and helps all of us — residents and visitors alike — understand the roots that continue to shape Virden today.

A Marc Above began in 2020 with a simple mission: show up for the community in meaningful, hands‑on ways. From meal drives and animal shelter supply drives to early beautification projects, Marc has spent years quietly investing his time, energy, and heart into making Virden a better place.
What started as small acts of service grew into larger efforts — including the planter project that brought new life and color to the square. In 2026, Marc expanded his vision again by creating the historic photo banners, reconnecting Virden with its past and sparking conversations across town.
A Marc Above continues to focus on community pride, beautification, and service‑driven projects that uplift Virden, especially as we celebrate this important Centennial year. His dedication, creativity, and commitment to community improvement laid the foundation for what would become the Roots & Renewal Project.

Neatos Elements stepped into community work in 2022 with a mission to bring people back to the square and strengthen local connection. Through organizing vendor events, coordinating Pop & Shops, and creating welcoming spaces for residents to shop, gather, and support local businesses, Neatos helped breathe new life into downtown Virden.
Alongside this, Neatos launched North Mac Neighbors Feeding Neighbors, a program dedicated to supporting families and building a stronger, more compassionate community.
When Marc’s beautification efforts began to grow, Neatos joined in — bringing organization, creativity, and a shared passion for community improvement. Together, this partnership has expanded into the larger Roots & Renewal Project, blending history, beautification, and community pride into one unified effort.
Neatos Elements remains committed to service, collaboration, and building a vibrant, connected Virden for generations to come.
