🔥 A Once‑in‑a‑Lifetime Event Is Rolling Into Girard

On July 18, the legendary Union Pacific Big Boy No. 4014—the world’s largest operating steam locomotive—will make a historic stop in downtown Girard. To celebrate this rare moment, the community is hosting Steam on the Square: The Big Boy Experience, a full‑day festival packed with vendors, food trucks, live entertainment, family activities, and thousands of visitors from across the region.

Whether you're a train enthusiast, a history lover, a shopper, or just looking for a fun summer day, this event brings something unforgettable for everyone.

Festivities begin around 9:00 a.m. and continue into the late afternoon.swer to this item.


Parking is $5 per car.  This is 100% goes to the organization running the parking areas.  Kiwanis, FFA, Girard PD, etc.


 As of July 15, Union Pacific’s Big Boy is scheduled to stop at the Center Street railroad crossing at approximately 12:00 p.m.

Please note that railroad schedules can change. If we receive updates, they will be shared on this event page.

 Yes! The Steam on the Square Big Boy Experience is free and open to the public. 


 Help us celebrate by wearing red, white, and blue—or any combination of patriotic colors! 


We encourage everyone to arrive early to:

  • Shop local businesses and vendors
  • Enjoy local restaurants and food trucks
  • Visit the merchandise tent
  • Secure a great viewing location before Big Boy arrives


Parking will be available in designated lots throughout Girard. Please follow parking signs and refer to the official event map for locations.

Shuttle service will be available from:

  • Courtyard Estates
  • Girard Middle School

Accessible parking will be located off Farmersville Road, south of M&M Service Company, along the east side of the railroad tracks.

Please refer to the event map for the exact location.

Beginning at 9:00 p.m. on Friday, July 17, a safety footprint will be established around the downtown square.

Road closures include:

  • West Jefferson Street from Route 4 to the road just east of Section Street
  • All entrances from Jefferson Street to West Franklin Street

Local traffic for residents within the safety footprint will still be accommodated.

See map posted within the event details for road closures.


 

After the closures begin, access into the safety footprint will be available only from:

  • Farmersville Road and the road east of Section Street
  • Farmersville Road onto South 2nd Street
  • Route 4 onto West Jefferson Street

Please review the official event map before arriving.


 

Once the safety footprint is established, vehicles will not be allowed to enter or leave, except for residents living within the restricted area.

If you plan to attend the event, please park outside the safety footprint before road closures begin.


 Yes.

Vehicles parked within the safety footprint—especially around the square—after 8:00 p.m. on Friday, July 17, are subject to towing at the owner’s expense.

 Absolutely! Lawn chairs are encouraged so you can comfortably enjoy the festivities and watch Big Boy arrive.

 Yes. Portable restrooms and public restroom facilities will be available throughout the event area. 


 Absolutely! Steam on the Square is designed to be a fun, family-friendly celebration for all ages.
